Devastation @ Bar Monsta

metaldazza / Oct. 23, 2008, 2:13 p.m.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of returning to Bar Monsta after two days of not being there  This time it was to see Devastation, The More I See and Blood Shot Dawn. Despite what the flyer said, Mutant and Seregon were not playing for various reasons.

The More I See, for me, didn't deliver. Listening to their MySpace page I feel that they just didn't deliver a strong enough performance. There was a fair sized crowd there though and a lot of people seemed to like what they heard. I will see them again in London and see if they step up to the plate.

Devastation pulled a packed house. I haven't seen Bar Monsta that full since an Evile gig a year or so ago. From the start the guitarists and singers stepped in to the crowd and thrashed their way through song after song. It's a miracle that they didn't get taken out by the mini pits that exploded from the sea of thrashing hair that lay before them.

Metal Weekend: Nocturnus and then FKÜ

metaldazza / Oct. 22, 2008, 12:01 a.m.

I had an insane weekend going to metal gigs.

On Saturday I went to the Underworld to see Nocturnus. The support bands were Slither, Memorial, Punish and Violated. Of the support acts Punish were the strongest. Violated were easily the worst. There was just no vibe for their set at all. They seemed unimpressed with the crowd, the feeling was mutual.

Nocturnus were great through. There was a healthy dose of Nocturnus and After Death songs. It was a bit cheeky of them to play so many After Death songs. It started to feel like an advert. After all we'd all gone along to see Nocturnus. Still you can't blame them for trying to introduce their new work to new fans. I managed to capture a video of the bands last song before the encore:

On Sunday I went to Bar Monsta to see F.K.Ü supported by Dr Death and Lifeless. Dr Death were apparently worse for wear: a night of drinking with F.K.Ü. after their reanimator gig in Birmingham. At one point they just stopped playing because they were too fucked. It didn't matter though as they are such amiable chaps you forgive them. Lifeless put on a good show. They seemed to be a little statuesque but I am sure their performances will improve over time. They music is certainly worth going to see live.

F.K.Ü. were really good. They were a lot thrashier then I expected them to be. I had never heard of F.K.Ü. until I read the flyer. They are well worth checking out. I caught the end of their set on video.

Gama Bomb, Bonded By Blood, Savage Messiah @ Underworld

metaldazza / Oct. 15, 2008, 8:43 a.m.

Full on thrash at the Underworld. I can't think of a better night out.

This is the first time I've seen Savage Messiah. I'd heard good things and they really didn't disappoint. SM are a refreshing act on the London thrash metal scene. They take their thrash seriously. Seriously enough to perform a slow song in front of a baying Underworld crowd! I'll be going along to see them again.

Sworn Amongst didn't press any buttons for me or most of the crowd. There isn't anything bad I can say about them, it was all just a little bit 'meh' if you get my drift.

Before Bonded By Blood performed they played one of the best sound checks I've ever heard. Twin guitar sound checks... awesome. When they did play the set they stormed through the Feed the Beast Album track by track. For me BBB stole the night.

Gama Bomb were brilliant as always. You just can't keep these guys down. Despite having a sore throat Gama Bomb's singer still managed to belt out in his own customary style 10 beer fueled thrash gems.

Yet again London showed it is the place to see heavy metal.

be seeing you
